HE torpedoes versus airplanes?

The rulebook says HE torpedoes “can hit multiple ships.” What about planes? Are they immune? If not, what’s the process for the torpedo attacking them?

Follow-up question: How do HE torpedoes interact with Chaff? A strict RAW reading says that chaff can block an HE’s attack, and since the chaff rules state that a successful roll destroys the torpedo, this blocks the HE’s entire attack, not just against the chaff-carrying ship.

My internal sense of logic says this should not be the case, so I’m asking here.

Well, chaff in the really real world makes the weapon system follow it and detonate–preferentially away from the target aircraft, so I could see how chaff in Levs would detonate an HE torpedo safely away from the receiving ship, which would also include any other ships that would have been caught in its blast.

Then again, these torpedoes don’t really track their targets, it’s just a large blast (ostensibly with a lot of shrapnel) to hit multiple ships at once.

But I would go with “On a successful roll, chaff destroys the HE torpedo, no ships are damaged”

My take would be that HE torpedoes do not affect planes. The section that you quote says nothing about hitting planes, only ships. Also, in the airplane section it says that torpedoes cannot hit planes.
Seems odd, but, RAW, torpedoes don’t seem to interact with planes at all. Although planes can interact with torps…
