When you want to set up a quick game you want to have it balanced, otherwise it will not be as fun for the players

So..how do you plan to take into account the skill, cunning, and style of the individual
players?

Simple - it gives you a benchmark to guage each sides forces. Nothing says that BV has to match, you can give the newer/weaker player 1.25 or even 1.5 times what the experienced player has

Leviathans is a simpler system, so hopefully it will be easier to make a point system than for CBT

On the plus side, while I feel some sort of balancing mechanic (like BV's) are going to be needed, a lack of a construction system means it's going to be harder for people to 'game' the system by tailoring mechs for it, and you only need to balance things around the final ship rather then go through something like 3 seperate balancing acts like you do in Battletech. (C-bill cost, BV, Tonnage)

The home of the brave and the free,
The shrine of each patriot's devotion,
A world offers homage to thee"

I think there may be construction in the advanced rules....

To thrown my 2 pence in.
For ease and simplicity we've been using the Type numbers to choose our forces.
Basically choose the total value you want to aim for the buy accordingly.

E.g.
In the last game we played we had 5pts each.
I was the French and chose 2 Type 2s and a type 1.
He was the nasty, smelly and generally foolish English and, although tempted to go for a Type 3 and 2 type 1s, also opted for 2 Type 2s and a type 1.

I'm not sure how well this would work for people who sit down and work out the maths of probability etc but none of us can be bothered to do that so this way works we enough for us.

"Which ship has the biggest guns... definitely this one! Right, now I need a fast one to flank the cheese eating surrender monkeys... Ho ho, they'll never see this one coming!. Finally I want something that can be used as fodder... ah *evil look* you'll do"  :D
