What are you reading?
« on: February 11, 2010, 10:09:49 PM »
So what are you currently reading? Outside of the required readings, I like to read other things that interest me.

I'm in the middle of two books

The Beginnings of Western Science by Lindberg

and Jarhead by Swofford (highly recommended I am about 1/3 through the book)

Re-gaining my appreciation for naval jargon, On Basilisk Station by David Weber.

"Yea verily, though I charge through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for I am driving a house-sized mass of "**** you." Mammoth Tank Driver, Tiberium Wars.

Can we have flying tanks?

one thing I will never get down;

Bow,stern, port, starboard. No matter how many times I have looked it up. It like trying to remember my phone number... or my SS number, or my lock combo, or student ID.

Bow is front, stern is rear.  Port is left, Starboard is right.

Just finished: Neal Stephenson's "Baroque Cycle" trilogy. In e-book format, because each book of the trilogy makes a handy chock for jet airliners. Also "Victory! Tales of scientific adventure and violence!", by the good folk at Weta.

In progress: "Assassin's Gate", about the leadup & aftermath of the second gulf war; Glen Cook's "Instrumentalities of the Night" series; "Toll the Hounds" from the Malazan books (preparing to purchase "Dust of Dreams")

Queued: "Rise & Fall of the Great Powers", a look at socio-economic factors in world politics from 1500 to 2000; "City of Cities" about London; "Empire of the Sun", the thinly disguised autobiographical novel  by JG Ballard.

I know that when I look it up, but I'll never remember it.

Sadly I can remember the pokemon theme song from my youth.

I blame Japanese fads.

 ;D ;D ;D

Oh and surprising I can remember all the original 151 pokemon.  ;D

Just today I picked up one of the Osprey Publishing Campaign series and read it when I got home. Sherman's March to the Sea is the specific title. I've recently gotten into the Osprey books, and found that they're a great intro into subjects I'm not intimately familiar with, giving me a nice stating point for further reading. I've also been working on a couple of manga series.

Try "port = 4 letters long, left = 4 letters long". How I learned to remember. "Stern" is usually pretty easy, so 'starboard' and 'bow' can be worked out by a process of elimination.

(Straw foot, bobble foot ...) :)

-Not an alternate history like the others(highly recommend)

On deck the Civil War serries by the same authors.

I'm reading a lot of different things at the moment, but the most prominent stuff remains:-

Fiction-wise, I'm working through my backlog of EBERRON novels -- I'm at Flight of the Dying Sun, which is the second book of the "Heirs of Ash" trilogy by Rich Wulf.

Non-fiction would be Tycho and Kepler: The Strange Partnership that Revolutionised Astronomy by Kitty Ferguson.

Oh, and, I'm re-reading some old DRAGON Magazine issues, my old copies of Marvel's Warlock and the Infinity Watch, and the WARHAMMER Armies: Beastmen supplement.

I've read all three of the Heirs of Ash: quite fun involving magical flying ships, and Rich Wulf's a nice guy [Apparently if you Google my username, you still find a page on the L5R wiki...].

I'm making my way through Death Note currently, and impatiently re-reading the first 3 books of Shadows of the Apt by Adrian Tchaikovsky so that I can start on Salute the Dark sitting beside my bed.  In fact, Tchaikovsky's books have a certain level of steampunk in them: Steam powered war automotives and clockwork-driven flyers side by side with shamanistic wings and magic.

They've been a real hoot so far. Kinda reminds me of the old SPELLJAMMER "Cloakmaster Cycle" series.

Oh, yes!

The Elvish secret weapons were really quite fun in that, IIRC.

Also the humanoiditarian Illithid with a Hat of Disguise.

I'm guessing you probably read the Prism Pentad and Maztican books as well?

Well, I just got a MW:DA Novel in the mail from someone who felt I should have it. To Ride the Chimera. Need to sit down and read that one shortly.

Also on my to-do list: Knife of Dreams (Last novel that author wrote. For that reason alone.)

Forward the Foundation and the other Harri Seldon novel, lent ot me by a friend.

Currently reading Red Storm Rising for the 20th time. I should really dig into the David Weber books I've got lying around.
