Council of Elders, or "How many SPI games do you own?"
« on: February 10, 2010, 08:38:10 PM »
Okay, hands up here anyone who remembers the glory that was SPI ... flat trays, paper maps, and rules chock full of enthralling new ideas, innocent of independant playtesting or grammatical editing  ;D

Favourite old SPI games: Nato, WW3, Sniper!, Sorceror, Deathmaze, Citadel of Blood, Outreach, Starforce: Alpha Centauri, The NExt War, Freedom in the Galaxy, War of the Ring, and Swords & Sorcery.

Honorable mention: Campaign for North Africa. 8 of us got involved in setup. preparing order sheets, etc etc ... when we finished, 2 days later, we decided "we're not playing this!"

Any other old grey grognards?

Air Combat, I remember running "Meteors over Milta" as a test scenario once I studied the rules. I really should have grabbed the used copy I saw a while back I probably could clean it up and still keep the flavor.

I have War of the Ring, bought second-hand in a Charity Shop, though.

Also have a number of Yaquinto games, and some of the Metagaming microgames (Trailblazer, Warpwar, Rivets etc.)

I had a few of the Metagaming Minigames. My favorite was Wizards, 4th Edition...the one that omitted Steve Jackson's name. ;D

I have 1st edition original Ogre ... black & white with a little red on the cover, and you had to cut the counter sheet up yourself. Love that game ... also Kung Fu 2000, Melee, Wizard, TFT etc

Starforce: Alpha Centauri for me. In fact, I've still got it around here somewhere, and all in its original box.

From there, I only really expanded into Outreach. StarSoldier was interesting, but I preferred the galactic scope of Outreach.

Panzergruppe Guderian was a favorite, and NATO.

I wasn't as much into SPI as much, because I got hooked on GDW

I did get a copy of Air War, and after trying to teach our gang the rules, they called it "Scare War", everytime I pulled it out they started running.  ;D

(Not as bad as SFB, but still pretty complex)

I know that I have Centurion and Chariot.

Did they do one for Rome in Gaul?

I have fully intact WW3 and Canadian Civil War sets, or rather, as a child I did.  My mother made me sell them, because of their complexity.  I REALLY want to get Canadian Civil War back.  Does anyone know where I might be able to find a set?

Being mindful of the forum rules, I would recommend Troll and Toad for secondhand boardgames; might also be worth checking BoardGameGeek.
