Trapped by the board edge
« on: February 08, 2010, 09:30:38 PM »
I was playing a 2 on 2 game of Leviathans last night and my teammate ended up with Montpellier trapped on the edge of the map due to not being able to turn. Is there a way to get out of this, or is the ship just stuck there?

In the quick start rules, nope. A unit that leaves the map is destroyed. However, if both players agree, there's nothing stopping you from just laying down another mapsheet and continuing the play area.

Remember that parts of a ship can enter the half-hexes along the edge of the playing area, a ship just cannot occupy a half hex after its movement is done. If even that won't help you, then per the straight up rules in the Lieutenant's Manual, it's stuck.

As ColBosch mentioned, you can also use a "rolling maps" rule, where you lay out additional maps as needed; the Captain's Manual has a specific rule that explains how to do that. Course if players wish to use that rule now, by all means...

So, can leviathans travel in reverse...will there be a mechanic in future rules to allow this?

There are no plans for such rules in the Core Box. You never know for down the line, however...

From an in-universe perspective, the arrangement of intakes & ducted fans makes speedy reverse travel difficult. They've got enough capability to 'brake', and dock handily. Modern-day airplanes have effective thrust reversers, but rarely use them to move backwards.

Indeed. Usually they use a tug. Speaking of which is a "tug" Lev remotely possible? Might be interesting for fiction at least.

Leviathan tugs? Would probably be ground vehicles - big steam tractors. It's all about traction; one lev towing another on a ropw might have a hard time.

What I suspected to be honest which would indicate that a "wet" tug would be used if the lev could still hover but had lost motive power.

My only concern on those issues is the fact that the damaged Leviathan would need to not only hover but create higher lifting force to compensate for the forward movement wanting to also drag them down.

Control surfaces can help with that; also, towing more slowly. Tugs aren't going to be greyhounds anyway.

Wet tugs work, if the lev is adrift over water. Could be hard if you hit problems while over Alsace-Lorraine. "Mein kapitan, zer tug! It is coming up zer Rhine!" ;)

Well, it would depend on the amount of damage I suppose...I was thinking of Lev barely able to stay in the air, let alone move forward. The slow towing makes sense, and would also make for an interesting scenario to have to protect as something that slow would be very temping.

Put a big steam generator on the tug and use an electrical cable for the mooring line. This is a) the sort of thing an early Edwardian inventor would come up with, b) reasonably logical, and c) amazingly dangerous. ;D
