How big are hexes in game terms?

I know the standard hex size is around 1.5" or something but how big is it in game terms?  30 meters?  50 meters?

We've learned from our Battletech experience - scale, ranges and length of term are carefully not defined. But you could probably work something out from the ship fluff cards ;)
