Ensigns and Roundels and Pennants (Oh my!)
(1/1)
Tonbo Karasu:
So, I was wondering what sort of national markings and iconography leviathans are going to have.
I would imagine that, to start with, they would utilise the same set of ensigns and pennants that the naval ships of the time did, although perhaps with some slight modifications. [The exception being the Berkuts, as always]
Take, for example, the British Navy.
There are three common ensigns, outside of the Union Flag. White, blue and Red, but only the White Ensign is used by the military ships of the navy. Perhaps another variant (Sky ensign? The Union flag in the top corner and the rest sky blue?) would evolve to distinguish blue-water navy from flying navy?
Of course, the other problem is that you can't see an ensign flying from the upperworks of a Leviathan that is above you. A number of thoughts spring to mind to deal with this.
One is to have an additional pennant or pennants flown from elsewhere. A spar out from the hull, about amidships, would permit the recognition from above or below more easily.
A second option would be to do as the germans did sometimes during WW II and have some sort of version of their insignia painted on obvious flat portions of the ship

Finally, it may be worthwhile borrowing something the French invented for their air force: the roundel. This could well be somewhat easier to paint onto the flanks of Leviathans and then maintain, compared to some of the more complex ensigns.
Any other thoughts?
