hexes are 1.25 inches.
If you purchase the British and French fleet PDFs you can take them to a printing store (Staples, Office Max).
Have pages 13-16 printed in 11x17 (ledger) size. Standard paper, color, 11x17 costs about $1.10 per page and Cardstock, color, 11x17 costs about $2.00 per page.
I chose cardstock since it is sturdier, less chance of ripping, and lays flatter.
If you do this, stay with the employee till they get it right. Make sure they check 'choose paper source by PDF page size'
When I got mine done they said it will NOT print in 11x17 because it showed 8.5x11. They had not yet checked page 13-16 and all the OTHER pages in the PDF were 8.5x11.
If they make any mistakes have them redo it till it is right. Only pay for the correct prints.
Its amazing how many times I pay people to do a job and then have to tell them how to do it.
I took my maps and affixed them to foamboard for ease of storage.
Using all 4 map pages from the British fleet PDF yields a mostly water map with 1 landmass which is about 1/4 island.
Using all 4 map pages from the Frensh fleet PDF yields a countryside of fields and roads.
Placing the two assembled maps together gives you a 43"x33" map. The two assembled maps do not blend though.
I preferred the British water map as it made the ships stand out better.
Here's an idea: Have them print out the 4 map pages normally, then print them out in mirror image.
Then you will have a 43x33 water map with a half island in the center of the long map edge.
Print 2 standard sets and 2 mirror sets and you'll have a 43x66 water map with an island in the center!
For the ships- I couldn't figure out a way to print the ship cards in the proper sizes, small for type 1, medium for type 2&3 so I just printed them all in the same size.
If you know a better way please tell!
