Even though it's actually spooky train themed, Flying on the Wings of Steam by Chris Vrenna has the perfect steampunk name.

I always think military marches are the best for both steam punk and aerial/space dreadnaught battles. Naval themes are classy too.

One of my favorite examples from super atragon.

Will also add the entire terran set of themes for the old space game Conquest Frontier Wars. Many tracks were done with a full orchestra, classy naval marches, and the creators are great about letting folks use their IP for whatever.

Just listening to it you can't help but think of giant airborne fleets on the move.

I'm also investigating a band called Abney Park - anyone putting a song together called "Airship Pirate" deserves investigation.
Any thoughts on them? I'm considering purchasing their most recent release -- Ęther Shanties -- which is suitably referenced as "steampunk themed," so I'm kinda curious about what others think of their music.

Ah, good ol' Last Exile. Nice music. I'm going to look into Abney Park some more.

Yeah. I know the Theremin isn't patented until 1928, but anything classical done like that would be kinda neet, if you ask me.

Try Vernian Process

very Jules Vern, steampunk, dark victorian in sound. Album "Behold the Machine" is great atmospheric music.

more Abney Park, seems like a very good description of a leviathen night raid,

also, this seems rather steampunk as well, the Clockwork Quartet

So, what music do people think is a) appropriate for Leviathans, b) appropriate for steampunk in general, c) both?

From a classical sense, Elgar's Pomp & Circumstance, Rule Brittania, and John Phillip Sousa definitely meet criteria a). I'm also investigating a band called Abney Park - anyone putting a song together called "Airship Pirate" deserves investigation.

Other ideas?

For category c) I suggest the Van helsing OST. The movie itself is not really steampunk, but its setting does fit quite well. Additionally, the score matches well with epic air battles. My favourite is "Final Battle".

Especially from 3:10 the picture of a colossal battleship darkening the sun and making her enemies shiver is obvious.

Alternatively, the OST of the new BattleStar Galactica series seems to fit as well for me.

I would strongly suggest the aforementioned Abney Park and Vernian Process.  They are both quite good, and you should see Abney Park in concert.  They have steampunk instruments and costumes, and they don't so much sing as perform.

I would also suggest you look into the Hellblinki Sextet and also the Extraordinary Contraptions.  They're equally steampunk, and equally good, in my (not so) humble opinion.

Abney Park's last 2 albums - Lost Horizons and Aether Shanties - have definitely embraced the steampunk movement. I've enjoyed them both - although in some ways they're quite at odds to the Leviathans universe. No-one there would be rejecting the 'modern' ways to 'throw them overboard!' ;) But it's still good.

Their earlier albums are a little different ... the cover of "White Wedding" kinda threw me (having met Billy Idol in his pre-Born Again era) ...

On (an extremely late) followup to my first post (and some of the responses to that post) in this thread, I have found a piece of music that works very well.

Recall that Vivaldi's Summer movement was discussed as a good representation of the setting?

Presto (Four Seasons, Part 3) - Epica.

Fits for the grittier bits of combat methinks.

"Yea verily, though I charge through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for I am driving a house-sized mass of "**** you." Mammoth Tank Driver, Tiberium Wars.

Can we have flying tanks?

So glad to see Abney Park and VP talked about here. Another good one if you prefer female muscians would be the Deadly Nightshade Society.
