Dystopian Wars, anyone?
pancakeonions:
Has anyone here seen Dystopian Wars, by Spartan Games? I've been following that game, and through their forums, heard about this game, Leviathans. They both look like they have a lot in common, at least superficially. Both have really cool models, and are miniature wargames in a similar-but-different world from our own, where big flying fortresses rule the skies. I was very stoked to hear Leviathans will be 1/1200 (last I read, anyway), as that scale is the same one as DW.
Dystopian Wars was just released (late November), and my starter sets and rules are on their way. It looks like we have a bit more of a wait for Leviathan.
Leviathan also looks very cool, and without knowing anything about the rules, I already like that it's hex-based, and that the minis will be plastic (thank you, thank you! Sooo much easier to store!) and pre-painted. DW is not hex based (rulers, very fiddly), but the rules are simple and the games of Uncharted Seas (similar rules, same company) I've played have been nice and straightforward. DW also includes a land and naval element, so it's not just giant airships. I haven't yet figured out if Leviathan will incorporate land and sea elements yet, but I'm new here.

Yup.
Bought the rules and a Japanese fleet.
Minis are nice, but over done with the theme.
The rules were terribly written, dull and offered very little from their other games. Same game with a few tweaks.
Also don't like some ships are naval, some ships fly, some ships can go on land (a bit more understandable).
The logic escapes me. Why have a game focused on such a wide variety of aspects?
Love the minis, but the rules are terrible and not all that original.
Shame I was looking forward to it as well.
Wish the minis came prepainted so I could buy more of them.
EDIT: I was on the forum once over there and posted a bit of criticism (1 time) and it seems like people take strong offense to any opposing views of their love child.
Fine and dandy to post counter view points but to the degree they took offense was odd.
Complaining about complaining is still complaining.

I flipped through a couple of Spartan Games books, but was really not impressed. It looks like they've basically got one system with different "flavors" of model available.

Basically. There are just a few differences just to give them a few differences, but the game engine is the same.
I do prefer me hex games more than free play. But will still play them.

That's disappointing to hear because as excited as I am about Leviathans, I was hoping Dystopian Wars would tide me over until then. I was planning on buying a Japanese fleet as well. However, judging by the "fluff" that I've read they don't have any fact checkers on their staff or they would've chosen names for ship classes more consistent with the Japanese navy. Also, I'm a little surprised they have an Empress on the throne. I want to hear the explanation for that. Japan has had a few Empresses but late Tokugawa/early Meiji Japan was definitely a man's world.
The local gaming store is really pushing Spartan Games so the last couple of weeks have been Uncharted Seas and Firestorm Armada. Nothing excited me about those themes, but I figured the gaming system would be the same. Somehow I assumed that with all of those releases they would have a solid set of core rules.
