I Play CthulhuTech Rolecall
« on: February 06, 2010, 05:24:26 AM »
Well, as long as we have one for BattleTech...

CthulhuTech is a roleplaying game published by Catalyst Game Labs, but produced by Wildfire LLC. Despite the name, it has no canon connection to BattleTech. What it does have is a post-Singularity humanity fighting desperately against Lovecraftian horrors. Think Cyberpunk 2020 meets Call of Cthulhu meets BattleTech (well, it does have mecha...).

Who here plays it?

It's a well put together game I have read the book several times but have yet to play my gaming group for some reason just does not really get the concept.

Read it. Loved it. Don't yet have a group to play it, unfortunately.

I have the books, but it is pretty far down in my groups rotation...primarily because of the
strict setting and the idea of mixed character types in the same game is so not possible that even suggesting it gets you permabanned from their forums.

What do you mean by mixed characters?

What do you mean by mixed characters?

If you have a psychic, they cannot be with a mecha unit, a Tagger cannot be with anyone else, Mecha cannot be in the
same group as Engels.

Heh...I think that the golden rule of gaming applies here. "If it doesn't work for your campaign, change it so it does."  I can understand if it is for possible game balance issues but it would be like telling a mechwarrior player that he could not be in a gaming group with a bunch of scouts in a A Time for war(CBT RPG for those few who are not Battletech players). Just my 2 cents.

Yeah..the Line Developer for Cthulhutech is actually very adamant about it...in fact, you cannot even have the skills
to pilot a Mecha if you are a tagger or psychic by his rulings.

With all due respect to CthulhuTech's line developer, that's going to be changed in my campaigns. It wrecks a lot of the point of even having multiple character types.

There's a point to say "helicopter pilots rarely know how to fire main tank guns; engineers rarely know how to fly jet fighters; veteran infantrymen can be medics, but are unlikely to be doctors" (corpsmen are another specialisation).

Certainly, D&D seems to tilt the other way - everyone seem to be half-orc half-dragon multiclassed Fighter/Sorceror/Buskers. The disadvantages of multi-classing don't seem to be that bad.

Perhaps the developers are trying to say "If you're a psychic, then you're too busy coping with the strains of that calling to develop the concentration to synchronise with a Mecha; if you're a Tagger, then your mindset means you can't get the separation to be a psychic".

I can understand both sides - on one hand some people will want to be able to do everything without accepting that life is a series of compromises. But one should be wary of forcing one's opinion on other people - which definitely works both ways.

From what I understand, it isn't that different character types cannot be in groups together, but merely that different character types cannot be in the same character together.  No multiclassing.

Can we have flying tanks?

The problem was that the way it is set up: If you are a Mecha Pilot, you are in a completely different division, and psychics are kept away from you. If you were a Mecha Pilot before you became a psychic, well...they will find out, and you will be yanked out, and put in for special training, and even if your psychic abilities really would make you a good mecha pilot(the Somatic ones..that boost your attributes), you will never be allowed near a mecha again...because, you know, being able to psychicly react faster, with greater precision is more useful on you with a gun after they completely retrain you then it will be if you are in a 'Mecha..

Taggers cannot be psychic anyway, because the Symbiont will eat them..but, if you are a Tagger, you are with the Eldritch Society..and the Eldritch Society cannot get mecha, or even powered armour, so forget there being a Mecha or powered armour pilot in the group if there is a tagger.
