Getting Started?
« on: August 09, 2010, 02:27:32 PM »
I played in one of the Leviathans demos at Gencon this year. ( After seeing it at the booth last year, and being intrigued. ) I really enjoyed it! ( My Wife and I loved it.  I initially was afraid of a SFB-like complexity, but quickly saw that it was quite intuitive. )  I came here to the forums looking for information on getting started, and can't seem to find any.  I understand that the game isn't quite out yet, and probably won't be for a little while now.  I also understand that there is a .pdf available, but I seem to have found a pile of .pdfs, are they all needed?  It looks like perhaps I only need The Lieutenant’s Manual to start playing, as it mentions that it comes with some printable ships to start with.

Other questions:

Where is a good place to get large scale hex maps from?  I have some from my old SFB stuff, which I can probably make do with.

Dice?  I looked at the dice for the demo, and the numbers on them did not appear to be evenly distributed.  I bought a bunch of blank d12s, and have the intention to paint them up for use.  I'm sure the information on the proper number distribution is in the pdf, am I correct?

Miniatures?  I've seen some threads here about using Axis and Allies War at Sea minis, a thread about lego minis, ( without pictures )  any other suggestions?

Any other advice to offer a noob?

Thank you for your attention.

For dice, I'd just use the standard polyhedral dice, d4, d6, d8, d10 and d12.  You can buy them in the corresponding colors to help as well.

dGreen = d4
dBlue = d6
dYellow = d8
dRed = d10
dBlack = d12

    At the moment, the only required .pdf is the "Lieutnant's Manual", which gives you the rules you used during the demo. After that, the two James' give you additional ships (and help restore faith in His Majesty's Air Service) and some rules, in particular turrets. The "Fleet" .pdf gives you 3D counters and maps, while the remaining are (roughly) fluff and design notes.
   for the dices, you can use regular dices (green= D4, blue= D6, yellow= D8, red= D10 and black= D12). Personnaly, I bought fresh dices from my FLGS in the corresponding colour, and directly grab the colour indicated on the ship card.
    For the maps, you can use any size of hex you already have, and print out the ship counter on scale. Most of the folk here have begun using BTech maps (can't see why, really :) ), but whatever you have on hand should do fine !
    Finally,  for the minis, the Lt's Manual and James' gives you printable counters with the top view of each ship and its name. Of course, nothing should stop you from using War at Sea ships, Legos, corks straight out of a bottle of Bordeaux/Fruit wine (choose according to your affiliation), sheets of paper....

Welcome aboard !

Fildrigar,

Thanks for trying Leviathans at GenCon, and welcome to the forums!

THe best place to get started is with the Lieutenant's Manual - you can get this at either

BattleShop: http://www.battlecorps.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=219
RPGNow: http://www.rpgnow.com/index.php?cPath=5228
DriveThru RPG: http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/index.php?cPath=5228

(Interesting, the last 2 seem to be the same company, but ...)

That has all the rules you used at GenCon, but only small-scale maps and flat counters. The larger maps and 'matchbox' counters come in the Printable Fleet downloads - the British has the ocean map and a selection of type I, II and III vessels, while the French has the pastoral countryside and a corresponding set of French units.  Further to that, the two James' Fighting Ship extracts provide the game statistics needed.

(Map-wise, you could also use Heroscape tiles, BattleTech maps, or anything else you can get your hands on. We don't mind.)

Miniatures: the one thing still really outstanding, although from GenCon it sounds like the manufacturer's been settled on. I have the two BattleTech minis they've already done for Catalyst, and I can say the quality of the plastic and the mini are excellent, so I anticipate great things.

Cheers,

W.

This would suggest the bare plastic route versus prepainted or pewter. Interesting...and exciting!!!!!!! I likey!!
How does this thing work again?...

I thought there was something about base coat and minor detail that could be easily painted over earlier this week?

I think you are talking about Dust Tactics.

Does anyone have the listing of how many/what number would go on a 12 sider of the appropriate color?  I'd prefer to use the blank twelve siders that I picked up at Gencon.

Thank you all for replying.  Is there any chance someone can make a "New Players Look Here" sticky at the top, so then next person who comes along can find out what they need right away?

And don't forget - Leviathans is released under a Creative Commons Licence. Which means you're welcome to make copies of the rules, etc for your friends, as long as you

- keep Catalyst's name & all the trademarks in place
- don't charge anything

If your friends like the rules, and feel that a handful of bux ain't too big a cost, they're then welcome to show their appreciation by buying the download.

Cheers,

W.

Lev demos are all running very well from what I can see. Everyone in my game was excited for it, it's had steady business both in the entry to Hall F as well as the main CGL booth. I've had BT regulars that had never heard of it last year excited to check it out this year. If my feed doesn't explain enough, Randall was excited too, and was lamenting no new minis to demo as of yet, but he did announce that they were currently working towards pre-assembled, pre-painted minis (probably by who did the Loki & Thor), that the paint could be used as a primer by those who wanted to make their own fleets.

Nope.

Thanks for finding my earlier post while I was recuperating this morning, LoO.  ;)

Yes, it was announced at the "What's up with Catalyst Game Labs?" seminar that they were currently looking at the same company that did the Loki & Thor to do the Leviathans minis, and that the current plan was for a pre-painted fleet that could be used right out of the box as is or be painted directly over by those that wanted to run their own colors.

-I- don't have that # distribution handy, but I'll look around this afternoon to see if that's been publicly released after I'm more settled in. I just got back from Indy after midnight last night (this morning?) and am still trying to reorganize things. Someone else might be able to get back to you sooner...
