Tabletop racers / Formula De
« on: May 23, 2010, 10:21:56 AM »
Any other race fans out there? My group really enjoys Formula D (the recent Asmodee re-build of the old Formula De game), especially since all of the tracks can still be used no matter the age or original company.

I've been able to find quite a few great fan-made tracks online, Board Game Geeks has quite a few good images available too. I've been trying to make my own boards, but am having a hell of a time trying to get the lines straight enough. ;) A graphic designer, I am not.

Anyone else enjoy racing boardgames, Formula D or otherwise? I can't be the only one. -cricket chirping sound- Well...maybe. hahah

I own and play Formula D. It's a fun little game, even though I couldn't care less about real life racing. In fact, I just played last weekend. I won too, despite a poor first lap. We usually play two lap races. I'd like to give the street racing rules a go as well. They look interesting.

My wife loves cars, and I brought NASCAR to her world...which she now gets as a strategy thing after hearing about what all happens in the pits to try to adjust the cars to the track and combining that to her own car engine repair knowledge. We've been to three races in the last 3 years, too. I've tried to get her into F1 or Indy, but she's not a fan of the rotary engine sound. :P

We've got the Asmodee set and their two current expansions, then some printed out fan-made tracks. She's not into the in-depth rules, so we generally run a 3-lap race using basic rules and allow for pitstops so that we can utterly burn through the last lap if we feel the need. Also, we're not much of the "cart/street racing game" type console players (other than Mario Kart), so we just run the "street racing" tracks with standard racing rules.

I just love the flexibility...we've taken to using the "Redline/Slipping the Clutch" optional rules from the old Formula De set too, allowing you to burn a damage point (or Engine if using full/advanced rules) to advance one extra slot. We had one game were each of us was just 1 slot short of a turn zone about 5-6 times and that got old fast.

I've grown up watching NASCAR and F1 and have only really played the 'raceday' from WIZKDIZ. Quick easy, but the little card pieces can snap really easily. Past that, The game goes quickly and stores easily. Never thought about building an actual track for it though. . . hmmmm

(the author is acting as if 1. he has enough time to do another terrain project; 2. he has the skills to actually do so. . . ) :)
How does this thing work again?...

I have/play Formula De (as opposed to Formula D).  I also have "Rush 'n Crush", which is a cute thing in a similar vein.  :)
