Their Cohorts all Gleaming
« on: April 15, 2010, 11:51:17 AM »
Here we have the deployment of the defenders from Loo.

Can I get a quick preference from you both: Simultaneous movement (One map per turn, quicker) or initiatived movement (three maps per turn, slower)

I have no preference either way, since it seems silly to me to be worrying about time when we're playing the equivalent of an old play-by-mail game.

I'd tend to agree. I'm not too worried about time. The greater number of ships means we're much more likely to have ships occupying the same spaces with simultaneous movement. I'm leaning toward movement by types, since initiative won't be an issue in this scenario.

Well, in that case, it's over to you bb, for the entry of your pair of Armoured Cruisers.  They'll enter the map from the right-hand border as the first move in Turn 1.

Does anyone need stats on their ships?

I do.  Creative Commons or not, I still don't like getting things without paying for them.

Okay, here's the new map.  The CAs are situated 1 column furhter east than anticipated due to the fact they needed to get their bow hex onto the map as well :)

CLs to move, over to you Loo.

Here's the final map for turn one.  Could I have your firing orders please?

I'm popping over to Slovenia for a week for a dance festival, so won't be able to do any artwork.  I might manage to do the rest of it though.

See you soon

I do hope there are weather rules in the finished manual, because we keep running into unfinished battles due to acts of God!!   :D ;D

Yeah, I blame this on Volcanic Ash!  ;D

I was in Slovenia at a Folklore festival, and one of the other groups that was supposed to be there wasn't.  I suspect that all their appearances and suchlike were divvied up amongst the 3 groups that were there (Scottish, Croatian and Lithuanian), leaving  me absolutely no free time whatsoever.

However, I am back in Edinburgh now, and am about to collapse into bed.  Expect to see firing results tomorrow.

Unfortunately, my imagination just isn't working too well, and the colour is a bit poor.

Firing Results:  Unless anyone is particularly interested in a dice-by-dice account, I'll just give totals

Red Fleet all fired at HML Beagle:
1, 11: Bounces off Armour
2, 9: Fails to Breach
4, 16: Breach: Trim Tank destroyed
5, 12: Bounces off Armour
1, 6: Fails to Breach
4, 19: Breach: Destroyed: Reroll 1: Gun Destroyed
2, 14: Breach: Gun Destroyed

Blue Fleet all fired at HML Courser
1, 5: Miss
1, 12: Miss
4, 6: Fails to Breach
1, 5: Miss
2, 13: Breach: Gun Destroyed
4, 13: Breach: Armour Destroyed
3, 16: Breach: Trim Tank Destroyed
6, 16: Breach: Gun Destroyed
6, 5: Fails to Breach
4, 16: Breach: Destroyed: Reroll 2: Destroyed 2dRed+8 = 15 Still going
3, 16: Breach: Destroyed: Reroll 6: Destroyed 2dRed+8 = 17 Still going
3, 7: Fails to Breach
2, 8: Fails to Breach

Move orders now wanted for the CAs

Somewhere in the North Sea

HML Destrier
"Hah! Our oldest ship is still more modern than their newest one," crowed Sky Captain Christopher.  "Let's show them what we're good at.  Signal the Courser and Charger to form an Oblique line to Starboard, us as the squadron lead.  We'll need to close with those Armoured Cruisers to negate their range advantage."

HML Evesham
"Three Light Cruisers, Admiral, that new Destrier class."
"Very good.  Have the Mafeking come into Line of Battle behind us and prepare turrets for broadside fire.  Target the point ship of their Oblique.  Is that little destroyer still around?"
"The Beagle?  Yes sir."
"Get Sir Montgomerie to try a flanking maneouver."

HML Destrier
"A destroyer's just come out of the lea of one of the Defenders, Captain."
"Hmm, have the squadron pick it off.  We don't want it taking potshots at our Turbines."

All along the British ships, puffs of white erupted from gunbarrels as the light, low-velocity practice shells were fired off, trailing chemical smoke to let the admiralty adjudicators on each ship know whether the shots were true.

HML Courser

"Please order a power down of the A turret, Mr Michaels,  and shut off the forward Tesla Coils.  The observers from the Evesham and Mafeking report that the majority of the broadside struck about there, and I concur."
"Do as the Lieutenant says, Captain Miller."
"Sir."

HML Beagle
"Radio the Admiral that our entire port broadside has been judged as disabled.  Ask if he wants us to continue."

Are you sure those names are right?  They seem to switch, and I can't tell which is which.

I should probably clarify things a little.  :-[

Red Fleet
HML Destrier, under Sky Captain Christopher (As per Errata I submitted for the Scenario)
HML Courser, underMr Michaels, advised by Sky Captain Miller
HML Charger, under Sky Commander Sir Clouston

Blue Fleet
HML Evesham, under Sky Captain Lancsman, Rear-Admiral Sir Coxmire aboard
HML Mafeking, captain undefined
HML Beagle, under Sky Captain Sir Montgomery

I'll be portraying most decision-making from the respective flagships (Destrier and Evesham), but damage results from the relevant targets.  I'm working on the assumption that 'damage' is judged by a combination of the observers from the firing ship and the target ship.  So, the fire from Evesham and Mafeking is spotted by their observers and reported to the captain of the Courser by his observer.  I also made the assumption that the observers would be deliberately ranked below the main bridge crew, for Chain-of-command purposes.

Evesham, Mafeking and Beagle all fired their broadsides at the front of Courser.  The big guns on the CAs managed to destroy slots 2, 3, 4 and 6.

Destrier, Courser and Charger concentrated their forward turrets on Beagle, destroying 1, 2 and 4.

Did that make any sense whatsoever?

Okay, the CAs sweep into a wide Starboard wheel:

Light Cruiser moves, please.

The Light Cruisers turn left into a closer formation.  What does the Beagle do?
