A request/suggestion (Stands)
« on: February 25, 2010, 04:28:26 PM »
This thread may be an insult to the intelligence and integrity of the people of CGL

But...

 please! please! please!

have high quality stands and pegs.

I play a lot of WWII air-combat games (Check your 6! and SturmComm) one problem I have is the weight issue, planes being top heavy, especially for the bombers. Having too tall of a peg also effects them, they tend to flop over if the base is too small and/or the plane is too heavy. And have found pegs that are too tall tend to break.

Again, something tiny and simple, and may very well be an insult to CGL, but something simple as that can be a downer for the game as a whole, watching your ships tip over and over.

Given the mass of the minis, believe me, we've tried to consider the stability issues ahead of having any in our hot little hands. But the stands as planned stand mainly on the land (sorry, it's that sort of morning) should address your concern, as they have a couple of uses apart from "keeping things up".

I do know my version with the short extendable radio antenna enabling accurate elevation tracking & LOS would have required an osmium brick in the base ...  ;)

Will the stands be adjustable?

I expect the simplest solution is to use the Battletech-style Hex Stands, but with a seperate peg and hex for each hex a ship occupies. So a Destroyer takes 2, a CL or CA takes 3, and a BB takes 4. That provides a lot of stability. The minis are pretty light, and if the hex-stands can hold a pewter Aerotech warship, four of them oughta hold a polystyrene leviathan.

For tracking elevation, having hex-shaped cut plastic stackables would be perfect, but you can hobby out a solution to that without too much trouble.

I look forward to these 'extra features'. Tracking elevation is going to be handy.

I thought it would be a bit more convenient if the whole base was a connected series of hexes like this.

Then have etched numbers on the rear or front hex for altitude tracker.

How many elevations will there be?

Well blah.....  :P

I was just thinking, you could have perhaps 5 or 6 different stand sizes, say with the pins being 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1.25", 1.5", and each stand being a different color. with two pins per stand for stability

Then you make the stands universal, so that each model had two identical holes on the underside so that  any stand can support any model. (Perhaps different color stands to indicate the pin lengths.)

So then all you do if you change levels is to swap stands, everyone can easily see what elevation you are at. Of course if there are 25 elevations it kinda blows my idea out of the water....  :(

I thought a clock face on the base would be easier and less cumbersome than having to take ships off a base then put them on another. Not something I would be interested in either.

I agree.  Those are perfect.  I also agree that a multi-hex stand is essential.  Considering the 3 and  4  (and eventually 5?) hex ships turn on one of the center hexes, having only a single front and rear hex stand could make turning confusing.  However, it also depends on how elevation is going to be handled.

We'll see.

Do they really need multiple stands? A single center base should suffice for just about anything plastic until the game progresses to a flying Nimitz or somesuch. Having had to mount pewter starships much larger than any Leviathan, I can assure you that weight is not a problem, and stability isn't too much of a problem either.

A single-stand base multiple hexes in length would work pretty well, though. Put that altitude dial around the post, and we're in business!

For stability I would say so.

If you paint your minis think you would be pretty pissed if they fell over and were chipped.

A plastic ship, falling from its own height?

You seal the mini properly, a fall like that'll never chip paint. Heck, I don't seal my stuff properly(only one coat of dullcoat), and I'm not worried one bit. Besides, such a fall would likely be sideways, and multiple stands won't help there. A single-post stand will work just as fine, and longitudal stability can be had just by making it multiple hexes in length, or by reducing the height of the stand to an inch or lower.
